Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about our study guides, lesson plans and AOA Pilot Prep. No fluff.
Checkride study guides
What do I get with a checkride study guide?
Two PDFs that simulate a mock oral: a questions-only version to quiz yourself and a separate answer key. Each guide also covers real-world scenarios, common checkride weak spots and mistakes, and each single-rating guide comes with a guided study plan. Browse the study guides.
Which checkrides do you have study guides for?
Private, Instrument, Commercial, Multi-Engine, CFI, CFII and MEI, at $19.99 each. Every guide is aligned with the standards for its rating: the ACS, or the PTS for CFII. Doing Commercial and Multi-Engine at the same time? The Commercial-Multi guide ($32.99) covers both in one set; it doesn’t carry the pass guarantee, which the separate Commercial and Multi-Engine guides do.
Are the study guides for the oral exam or the written test?
The oral. The guides help you practice explaining and applying what you know the way an examiner will ask it, rather than multiple-choice written-test practice, alongside your ground school, flight training and instructor. For CFI, CFII and MEI, the guide covers the questions you’ll be quizzed on and explains what you’ll teach versus be quizzed on. Practice the teaching portions out loud; our lesson plans help you build them.
Will my examiner actually ask these questions?
Not all of them; no examiner asks everything, and each asks differently. Each guide is built from an examiner’s point of view and breaks down every topic in your rating’s ACS (PTS for CFII), so you’ll have practiced the areas they can draw from.
My checkride is coming up. How much time do I need?
Each single-rating guide includes a guided study plan: 3 weeks for Private, Instrument, Commercial and Multi-Engine, and 1 week for CFI, CFII and MEI. Short on time? Run the questions PDF as a mock oral, check yourself against the answer key, and spend your remaining days on what you missed.
I already have books or ground school. Do I need this too?
Keep them and use this alongside. The guides are a no-fluff reference built around your rating’s standards, with a questions-only PDF to drill yourself and emailed updates, so you can check what you can actually explain before the oral.
I’m training outside the US. Will these work for me?
They’re built on the FAA’s ACS and PTS, so they’re made for FAA checkrides. If you’re testing under another authority, such as Transport Canada or EASA, the standards and questions will differ.
Lesson plans
What’s included in the lesson plans?
Editable PDF lesson plans with a step-by-step structure: what the student needs to know, the points to emphasize, real-world scenarios, questions to ask your student and a summary of key takeaways. You also get student worksheets with answers, and some lessons come in PowerPoint too.
Which lesson plans do you have, and how much are they?
CFI ($75) covers Private, Commercial and FOI lessons. CFII ($49.99) covers Instrument and FOI, and MEI ($49.99) covers multi-engine lessons. Add two or more and 12% comes off automatically, or get all three as a set for $149.99. See the lesson plans.
Are the lesson plans for my CFI checkride or for teaching students?
Both. They’re built for CFI applicants preparing their lessons and for instructors who want more structure. They’re ACS/PTS-aligned and editable, so you can add your own examples and tailor the details to the airplane you fly.
What’s the difference between the lesson plans and the instructor study guides?
The lesson plans help you build and teach your lessons. The CFI, CFII and MEI checkride study guides help you practice the questions you’ll be asked on the oral, with a separate answer key. They’re sold separately, and you save 10% automatically when you add an individual lesson plan set together with the CFI, CFII or MEI study guide.
AOA Pilot Prep
What is AOA Pilot Prep?
It’s our online supplemental ground school, and it works on any device. It explains every ground topic of the ACS for Private, Instrument, Commercial, Multi-Engine and CFI in plain English, with video and PDF lessons. Bonus courses cover FAA medicals, written exam prep, study strategies, radio calls and interview prep.
How much is Pilot Prep, and is there a free trial?
$19.99 a month on Whop, after a 3-day free trial. Cancel anytime; you keep full access as long as your membership is active. Start your free trial.
How is Pilot Prep different from the study guides?
The study guides are PDFs you keep that simulate your oral exam, with questions and an answer key. Pilot Prep is a membership that teaches the topics behind those questions, with video and PDF explanations. You can use both: Pilot Prep to learn it, the guide to practice explaining it.
Does Pilot Prep include live classes or endorsements?
No. It’s a supplemental ground school you study on your own schedule: there are no scheduled class meetings, and it doesn’t provide endorsements. Your instructor handles your knowledge-test and checkride endorsements.
How do I cancel Pilot Prep?
Sign in to Whop, open Profile, then Orders, select your membership and choose Cancel membership. Whop generally keeps your access until the end of the period you’ve already paid for. To avoid being charged after the free trial, cancel before the 3 days are up.
Do I need flight experience to join Pilot Prep?
Nope. Whether you’re just starting or already training, you’re welcome.
Orders, downloads & updates
How do I get my files after I buy?
Study guides and lesson plans are digital, so nothing ships. Your files are generally delivered right after a successful payment, though a payment or fraud check can briefly delay them. Download links can expire, so save your files once you have them.
My files didn’t arrive. What should I do?
Give it up to 30 minutes, then check your spam and promotions folders and the inbox you used at checkout. Still nothing? Contact us with your order number and purchase email and we’ll help you get access.
Can I use the guides on my phone or tablet?
Yes. They’re PDFs, not a printed book, so you can open them on your computer, tablet or phone with a compatible PDF reader. Save your copies after downloading so they’re always handy.
Do I get updates after I buy?
Yes, updates are included. When a guide or lesson plan is revised, the new version is emailed to you, so buy with an email address you check and save the newest version when it arrives.
Discounts & bundles
Do you have study guide bundles?
Yes: the Starter bundle (Private, Instrument, Commercial) is $45 and the Complete bundle (Private, Instrument, Commercial, Multi-Engine, CFI) is $75. For instructors, the CFI, CFII and MEI bundle is $45. Each costs less than buying its guides one by one, even after the automatic 15% multi-guide discount (about $51 for three guides, $85 for five). See the bundles.
Do I save if I buy more than one guide?
Yes. Add two or more individual checkride study guides to your cart and 15% comes off automatically, no code needed. It applies to the seven $19.99 guides (Private through MEI), not to the bundles or the Commercial-Multi guide. If your cart also qualifies for a lesson-plan saving, the cart applies whichever combination saves you more.
Is there a discount on lesson plans?
Yes, automatically in your cart: 12% off two or more lesson plan sets (CFI, CFII, MEI), and 10% off when you pair instructor lesson plans with the CFI, CFII or MEI study guides. Or get all three lesson plan sets together for $149.99.
Can I use a discount code on top of these savings?
Not with the multi-guide 15%, and most of our codes can’t be combined with the lesson-plan savings either. Your cart shows the final price before you pay.
Are the radio call cheat sheets included in the bundles?
No. The VFR and Instrument Radio Call Cheat Sheets are $4.99 each and sold separately. See radio call help.
Refunds & guarantee
Is there a pass guarantee?
Yes, on study guides and study guide bundles whose listing shows “Pass your checkride 1st try, or your money back.” It applies to your first official FAA practical test for that certificate or rating, and you must buy before that attempt; mock orals, stage checks, end-of-course checks, knowledge tests and retests don’t count.
The refund is what you actually paid for that guide (for a bundle, that rating’s share). Read the full terms.
How do I claim the pass guarantee?
Within 30 calendar days of that first attempt, email airlinesonautopilot@gmail.com with the subject “Pass Guarantee Request”. Include:
- your name and purchase email
- your order number
- the certificate or rating and test date
- a copy of your Notice of Disapproval
Black out your certificate number, FTN, date of birth and home address first.
Can I get a refund on a study guide or lesson plan?
Because they’re digital, purchases are final once your files are delivered. The refund policy lists the exceptions, such as a duplicate charge, a payment error, files we couldn’t deliver, or a guarantee shown on the listing (like the pass guarantee, or the radio call cheat sheets’ money-back guarantee). See the refund policy.
Can I get a refund on my Pilot Prep membership?
Cancelling stops future renewals, but it doesn’t refund the current billing period, and we generally don’t give prorated refunds for unused time. Renewed by accident? Contact us within 48 hours; if you haven’t used it since the renewal, we may consider a refund as a courtesy. You can also request a refund from your order in Whop.
